A. #1 There relatively few people preparing for the CELBAN as compared to the IELTS. Many of the books that have been prepared for the TOEFL and IELTS were printed by publishers like Cambridge Press. They have a global reach, with thousands upon thousands of people taking these exams each year. Thus, it is a profitable business. Why do you think they do not create books for the CELBAN? Publishers don’t publish books to help people. They publish books to make money. Because the CELBAN is only available in Canada; and, it is only available for nurses. That is a very tiny market. It is not profitable. So, they don’t do it!
#2 The Education system, and testing methods, in Canada, are different from back home. Passing exams in Canada requires the demonstration of skill. That means the answers cannot be memorized.
You have to actually learn something!
And, you have to demonstrate what you have learned. For writing, you have to demonstrate a variety of skills – that are outlined on the CELBAN Centre website. For speaking you have to demonstrate professional communication skills and conflict resolution skills. And, you have to demonstrate the skills based on the Canadian culture not what you would do back home. The exams always have answers created for international professionals that if you answer them based on your cultural values you will get the answer wrong!
It is impossible to learn culture from a book!
It is impossible to demonstrate skills from a memorized answer.
Anyone who teaches all of the skills at the same time is doing you a disservice.
Anyone who teaches you to prepare for the exam in a few days, or weeks: is doing you a disservice.
It takes time and practice to actually learn something!
So, I have broken down the skills into subsets. I have focused on each weakness so you can turn it into a strength. In this way, you can focus on developing one skill at a time.
It is advisable to NOT do all of the grammar modules together. It is advisable to do them one at a time. Take your time. Learn! Your future, your career, will be all the better for it.
#3. Most people that teach people English are English teachers, and only teach English as a Foreign Language as a trade.
I am a Career Developer with a Master's in Adult Education.
My knowledge and experience of career development are embedded in all that I do. My experience teaching university students professional communication skills is embedded in what I do. My experience teaching Internationally Educated Health Professionals is embedded in what I do. I am not focused on you passing an exam. I am focused on teaching you skills that advance your career and your life so that you can fulfil your dreams of life in Canada in the least amount of time possible.
I dedicated over ten years to developing the careers of Internationally Educated Nurses; and now, I have created resources that will assist all Health Professionals including doctors, dentists, midwives, x-ray techs, med lab techs, physiotherapists, pharmacists.
Show me one other person on the planet who has done that. You won’t find anyone; because I am the only one dedicating my life to your success! Your career! Your dreams!
A. CELBANPrep began as a self-study program; but, people kept asking for writing and speaking coaching. What happened, as I started coaching people, is a pattern emerged. People – from different nations – had the same weaknesses. So, I created the Grammar Series. The goal is to focus on the weakness, intensively, to turn it into a strength and then to apply it while writing or speaking.
So, while CELBANPrep started with one module per skill, it expanded to include the Grammar Series.
And, I as CELBANPrep Grew, I started training writing coaches and speaking mentors. I needed to create resources that they could use, that would be part of the certification program. That is why I started creating resources for facilitators, tutors, and coaches. I hoped that CELBANPrep would be used by people internationally, outside of Canada, so I provided the slides, posters and a final exam for teachers to use in the classroom.

A. No matter what your score is on the IELTS, start with the four resources listed below. They will get you started, and point you in the right direction for you.

The thing to understand about education, and the licensure process in Canada, is that it is individualized. You are not considered part of a cohort, a group, a class, a year. You are considered an individual. As an individual your strengths and weaknesses are different from the person beside you; so your education path in Canada will be very different. CELBANPrep accounts for this individualization process.
A. #1 Mary has one hour to study a day. Her weakness is advanced punctuation. With a 7 in IELTS, she doesn’t need to spend a lot of time on grammar basics. So, she can focus intensely on the Advanced Punctuation module before taking CELBANPrep Writing and Speaking at the same time.
#2 Sandeep had a 5 in IELTS. And, as a working father, he only has half an hour, 3 times a week, to study. Sandeep decided to focus on all of the CELBANPrep Grammar Modules before he takes CELBANPrep Writing Level One. He read the Study Planners and knows his process will take longer, but he also knows he will be more confident when he takes the exam. He looks forward to taking CELBANPrep Writing First, then Speaking, then CELBANPrep Writing Level Two.

A. The answer to that question depends on two variables:
1. Where are you starting at? What is your score on the IELTS?
2. How much time do you have to prepare?
3. Which resources are you willing to access?
1. Where are you starting at? What is your score on the IELTS?
a. If you have a score of 7 on the IELTS expect to spend a least 3 months preparing for the CELBAN: for 30 minutes a day.
b. If you have a score of 5 on the IELTS, expect it to take 8-12 months to prepare: for 30 minutes a day.
2. How much time do you have to prepare?
c. If you have lots of time, spending 30 minutes a day on two or three skills per day would be great: 30 minutes on grammar, 30 minutes on writing, 30 minutes on speaking.
d. If you have less time every day, a minimum of 30 minutes a day is recommended. But, if you don’t have that much time, 30 minutes 3x per week is adequate. It will take you longer, but at least you are working towards your goal!
3. Which resources are you willing to explore?
e. If you use both the Grammar Series and CELBANPrep together, you will achieve your dreams in less time; and, you will advance your entire career more smoothly because you will apply what you learn to everything you do and every aspect of your life.
f. If you decide to skill the CELBANPrep Grammar Series, and / or decide to skip CELBANPrep Writing Level One and just use CELBANPrep Level Two you are doing your self a disservice. It takes more time and money and energy to prepare by using all the resources available to you; but, didn’t you come to Canada to achieve your dreams?
Remember CELBANPrep Writing has two levels:
· CELBANPrep Writing Level One teaches you the secret of increasing your score in writing (and also speaking).
· CELBANPrep Writing Level Two applies these skills in a medical context -> specifically for the CELBAN and the rest of your career!
· Level One is a prerequisite to Level Two. It MUST be completed first!
A lot of people ask me if CELBANPrep can still be used because one of the Writing Tasks has changed. I shake my head when I get that question.
· Has the format of the test changed that you are limited in time when you do the writing task?
· Have they changed the assessment of your grammar? Punctuation? Style? Fluency?
No? Then CELBANPrep is still applicable! Furthermore:
· Is your goal to be a licensed health professional in Canada?
· Will you be writing medical reports of all kinds?
· Will you be required to take other courses – at a university level – at a Canadian campus?
Then is your goal short term – the exam- or long term: your career? And everything I have created is applicable, no matter what changes happen.
